This year's benefit will be honoring Coach Ragsdale, and in memory of Dan Camp.
In Memory of Dan (DC) Camp
The Cinderella story of the Columbus College baseball program began when Columbus College was delegated senior college status in 1968. The story of the baseball program debuted in 1970 with the team in its first year of competition, finishing the season with a 26 -9 record. The team was selected as the number one independent baseball team in District 25 and competed in District 25’s baseball tournament in its first year of competition.
The success of the baseball program, in no small measure was due to the signing of south paw, Dan Camp, a Junior College first team all-American. He was also named the MVP of the All-American Amateur Baseball Tournament with his name appearing on a plaque in the Hall-of-Fame in Cooperstown, New York.
Dan’s first year records at Columbus College were impressive. His 7-2 win-loss record with his records of 38 scoreless innings and his earn run average of 0.34, I believe, is also the current pitching record at CSU. DC only pitched one game his senior year due to an arm injury playing summer baseball. That one game was a no-hitter only to lose to Florida A & M 2-1 during the region tournament. Dan, as well as a few others, were responsible for the immediate success of the Columbus College baseball program, and the team has never looked back.
People often ask, “How were you able to recruit a First Team All-American to Columbus College, a program with no playing field, no equipment, and no fence?” The answer was simple, I told him that if he could hit, he could play when not pitching. Since we had no field, we had fall practice at Golden Park. When I saw DC hit over the right field wall at Golden Park, I knew I had made the right call. He could play when not pitching.
I cannot begin to tell you the many contributions that Dan Camp made to our first baseball team. Perhaps Dan said it best in a letter to me, “The best thing that ever happened to me was coming to Columbus College. I have truly enjoyed and appreciated the friendship that I have had and will always have with you. Not to mention the life-long memories we will share in reference to the baseball teams and the experiences we had with all of the different players. Being inducted into the Columbus College Athletic Hall of Fame is definitely an award that I am most proud of. The fact that I am being inducted with you makes it that much more special.
RIP, DC.
